In the cannabis industry, the strain is the expression used interchangeably with selection, cultivar, and variety. It has no official botanical significance and has fallen out of favor in horticultural circles. A strain is a specific variety of plant species that offer a unique blend of cannabinoids such as CBG, CBD, and THC.
It is developed to produce distinct desired characteristics in the flower. The names of the strains often reflect the appearance of the plant, its promised buzz, or its origin. Strains popular varieties include Jack Herer, Durban Poison, Bio-Diesel, Trainwreck, and OG Kush. Although the medical cannabis industry strives to ensure consistency, the strains can easily be identified wrongly.
