Decriminalization

Decriminalization of cannabis is defined as the removal or reduction of the classification or criminal status of cannabis use. This can be done legislatively or municipalities can choose not to enforce existing laws.

While most states in the United States have in some ways started to legislatively decriminalize the use of cannabis, the United States federal government continues to define cannabis as a dangerous drug with high potential for abuse and no medical value. Proponents believe that decriminalizing cannabis can be used for medical purposes and is safer than tobacco or alcohol, and will reduce opioid abuse and dependence..
